Pierre Pierce NBA Draft Scouting Report
December 7, 2004
Strengths
An intriguing combination of athleticism, size, and skill. Is a high-flyer wing with a score-first mentality, but also has the ability to play the point. At 6-4, moves like a PG, and certainly has the handles. Will use his first step to blow by almost any guard. Can finish on anybody, but will also score over people with a nice midrange floater. Opportunistic and versatile defender, with the potential to get a lot better. Can bother a lot of guards with combination of speed, size, and strength. Averaged nearly six rebounds per game last season, and has the leaping ability to steal rebounds away from the big boys.

Weaknesses
Terrible decision maker, stemming mostly from a single-minded offensive mentality. Doesn't have problems seeing the floor, but still averaged more turnovers (4.0) than assists (3.7) last season. Tries to do too much most of the time, and ends up forcing a lot of plays. Leads to defenses being able to predict what he's going to do. Ends up commiting more than his fair share of offensive fouls and takes way too many tough shots. Often overdribbles and puts himself in the situation of having to beat the shot clock. Another knock is an inconsistent outside shot, although there are some signs that this is being shored up a bit. Still can't shoot free throws.

Competition
Plays in the Big Ten, which might be the toughest conference for a guard to play in, night-in, night-out. Watch how he fares against teams who have guards that can match his athleticism, such as Illinois or Michigan. Scored 61 points in 3 games against the Wolverines last year.

Outlook
Hard to see Pierce making the first round without a change in offensive mindset, but has all the tools of an NBA player. There aren't many college guards who have as many NBA-caliber facets to their game. If he learns to use his unique abilities a bit more intelligently, he could move up draft boards very fast. Comparisons could be made to any number of NBA combo guards. He's got a bit of Larry Hughes' game/approach in the body of Antonio Daniels.

Comments
The top scoring option in Iowa's potent three-guard attack. After looking a bit out of place at the point as a freshman, Pierce now plays off the ball most of the time. Athletic teams like to pressure Iowa's regular-time PG Jeff Horner. Because of his athletic ability, Pierce ends up doing a lot of the ballhandling in these situations.

Played a typical game against Texas this November in the Maui. Finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 4 steals, but performance was marred by a stretch of play late in the second half. With just over five minutes to play, was leading a 3-on-1 fast break with a chance to put the his team up by seven. Settled for a pull-up jumper in the lane, which he missed. A minute later, intentionally fouled LaMarcus Aldridge, which resulted in 70-64 lead being cut to 70-69. Redeemed himself by hitting the eventual game winner, a contested 25 footer that put Iowa up by one with 44 seconds to play.
